How Much Does a Steel Roof Cost in Florida?

Steel roofing is a great roofing material in terms of both aesthetics and durability. But many homeowners want to know, how much does a steel roof cost in Florida? This is a smart question, because the cost of metal roofing is the main hurdle that keeps people from getting a new metal roof.

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as just giving a single number. Yes, we could say that the average cost of a new steel roof in Florida is around $15,000. But if you move forward with that number, there’s a good chance that the actual cost of your new metal roof could be substantially more or less than that number.

We’re John Hogan Roofing, and we’ve been installing new steel roofs in Florida for over 30 years. That’s how we know all the factors that go into steel roofing costs! Keep reading for our breakdown of how much your steel roof could cost and how to get an exact figure.

How Much Do Metal Roofing Materials Cost?

How Much Do Metal Roofing Materials Cost

While people often refer to metal roofing as “steel roofing,” the truth is that many metal roofs are made either without steel or with other types of metal supporting the steel. And the type of metal in your roofing materials has a big impact on the price.

Below are roughly how much different metal roofing materials may cost to install per square foot:

  • Aluminum: $7-$22
  • Tin: $10-$30
  • Zinc: $15-$22
  • Copper: $20-$40
  • Galvalume Steel: $5-$10
  • Galvanized Steel: $6-$20

As you can see, the total costs of a metal roof can vary a lot. That’s part of why we don’t recommend simply using the average cost of a steel roof to guess how much your new roof will cost. And the other reason why we don’t recommend that is that there are many more pricing factors than just what materials you use.

Factors in Steel Roof Costs

Getting a new roof is always complicated. But this is especially true for metal roofing, which requires much more experience and time than installing a shingle roof. Moreover, there are also a lot of variations in the types of metal roofing and how much they cost. With this in mind, let’s look at some of the biggest contributors to the cost of a steel roof in Florida.

Steel Roofing Labor Costs

Since metal roofing is so much more complicated than other roofing materials, the labor is more expensive. This accounts for a lot of the difference in steel roof costs vs. shingle roof costs. But how much does labor cost to install a metal roof?

Well, that depends on your specific material. But a good rule of thumb is to expect labor to make up two-thirds of your total roofing costs. The lower end of steel roofing labor costs tends to be around $400 per 100 square feet of roofing.

Naturally, some people are tempted to go with the cheapest offer to cut their roofing costs. And while we want everyone to get the best possible deal, we don’t recommend looking for cheap metal roofing labor. While cheap labor might save you money upfront, problems with your new roof will cost you a lot more time and money as they cause recurring issues and even structural damage. For this reason, going with cheap labor is almost never a good investment in your property.

Styles of Steel Roofing

Styles of Steel Roofing

There are two types of steel roofing panels: those with exposed fasteners and those with hidden fasteners. And which one you choose can have a big impact on the steel roof cost for your home or business.

Those with exposed fasteners, corrugated metal panels like 5V, are a much less expensive option. These panels have a wavey build that allows for easier, faster installation by letting panels naturally slot together. The downside is that since their fasteners are exposed to the elements, they can wear down over time, threatening the security of your roof.

Sheets with hidden fasteners, like standing seam roofing, are on the more expensive end of the pricing spectrum. These offer a flatter look that is less industrial and more appealing for residential structures. And since the fasteners are hidden underneath the panels, they’re not subject to weathering. That kind of protection can add many years to your roof’s lifespan!

Roof Accessibility

Many people don’t know this, but how easy your roof is to access can have a big impact on total costs. For example, if your home is surrounded by thick shrubs on all sides and there’s no easy way for roofers to get to your roof, you can expect roofing costs to increase.

On the other hand, having a clear driveway and easy access to your roof can keep costs low. Since the crew will be able to easily remove your old roof and install the new one, you’ll keep labor costs down and speed up the time it takes to install your new steel roof.

Steel Roof Cost FAQs

1. Q: What factors influence the price of a steel roof in Florida?

A: The cost of a steel roof depends on many factors, including the size of the roof, its accessibility, and the composition of the steel roofing sheets. For this reason, the best way to get an exact steel roof price is through a personalized roofing estimate.

2. Q: Are steel roofs expensive?

A: There are many choices you can make for your roof that will lower the cost of steel roofing, like using sheets with exposed fasteners. But when compared to roofing materials like shingles, yes, steel roofs are expensive.

3. Q: What’s included in a steel roof replacement?

A: A steel roof replacement requires more than just tearing off shingles and putting on metal. It also requires roof decking, insulation, underlayment, flashing, and trim, to name a few features. To make sure you’re getting a robust roofing system, make sure that all of these features are included in your roofing estimate.

4. Q: Can I lower the cost of a steel roof by installing it myself?

A: We don’t recommend DIY roof installation for any material, and steel roofing least of all. Steel roofing is very complex, and trying to install it yourself could waste thousands of dollars and leave you with an uninsurable home if your new roof doesn’t pass the final inspection.

5. Why can’t I get an exact steel roof price without a quote?

A: Like any other commodity, the cost of steel is constantly in flux. This means that the cost of your roofing materials can similarly change from day to day. Additionally, there are so many unique features in steel roofing that the only way to give an exact cost is to know what you’re looking for and your unique roof.
